Boris Lazarevich Oshkukov (1948 – 2021) was a physician, artist, mosaicist, sculptor, and patron of the arts. As an abstract artist, he worked primarily in Roman and Florentine mosaic techniques, created wooden sculptures as well as stone and glass compositions. His work played an important role in shaping 21st-century symbolism.
Oshkukov’s artistic practice transformed irrational, subconscious sensations into rationalised expressions. Beginning in the early 2000s, he developed a distinctive strand of abstractionism, extending the avant-garde legacy of the 20th century.
His pioneering application of abstraction to Florentine mosaic was unprecedented. While the perception of his work remains deeply subjective, each piece resonates with a profound sense of inner freedom and cosmic consciousness. Oshkukov’s abstract compositions express life’s fundamental question: ‘What is the purpose?’ For the spiritually free individual, this question remains open – yet its pursuit forms an indelible part of existence.
Boris Oshkukov’s entire oeuvre was dedicated to exploring the moral dimensions of being. He founded DOC ART GALLERY as a vehicle for transmitting ideas of human dignity and spiritual freedom. The mission he established for the Gallery endures unchanged.
